Measles cases reported in Arequipa, Peru
Vaccination campaign started September 15 and will go through October 27
Three suspected cases of measles in children under five years of age were detected in the Arequipa region, reported the Regional Health Management (GERESA) of Arequipa.
Health personnel took samples from the patients to send them to the National Institute of Health (INS) in Lima, in order to confirm or rule out the disease.
The person in charge of the Immunization area of GERESA, Elizabeth Giovanna Valdivia Manrique, specified that the children showed symptoms of the disease upon arriving at the health facilities, so they were reported as suspected cases and received the corresponding care.
Regarding the origin of the suspected cases of measles, the official specified that two of the minors come from the province of Islay, and the third case is a child from Arequipa.
Valdivia Manrique reported that they are awaiting the results of the samples sent to Lima, while the minors who received medical attention are stable.
On September 15, the regional sweeping campaign against measles began, with the goal of immunizing more than 110,000 children under five years of age against the disease in schools and in all health facilities in Arequipa.
