To date, the total number of confirmed and probable cases is 837 (746 locally acquired and 91 with a history of travel to Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Cuba).

Ninety-three percent of cases are concentrated in the Northwest region (NOA), with 782 confirmed and probable cases. Salta continues to be the province with the highest number of cases (494 confirmed and probable), but significant transmission clusters have also been identified in Tucumán (144 cases) and Jujuy (80 cases).

As for the rest of the country’s provinces, the upward trend continues. To date, 47 cases of chikungunya have been registered in Santiago del Estero and 17 in Catamarca. In the Central Region, Buenos Aires Province also has a high number of cases, with 28 confirmed and probable cases. It is followed by Córdoba with 14 cases and the City of Buenos Aires with 7. The remaining cases are located in Entre Ríos, San Luis (2 cases each), Santa Fe, and Chaco (1 case each).

Given this scenario, the national health ministry is maintaining intensified surveillance of Acute Febrile Syndrome of Nonspecific Origin (AFNE) to identify changes in viral circulation patterns, optimize response capacity, and support jurisdictions in strengthening their response. It also recommends that health services apply direct and confirmatory methods (such as qRT-PCR and NS1 ELISA) to samples taken during the first 6 days of symptoms, in order to provide timely information that allows for the characterization of circulating arboviruses and the generation of early alerts to guide local control measures.

Since late January, 108 cases of chikungunya have been confirmed—primarily in the West Coastal sector (82%)—though cases have also been detected in the Ile de Cayenne, Savanes, and Maroni sectors in recent weeks, indicating an expansion of the virus’s geographical distribution across the territory.

The last chikungunya outbreak in French Guiana dates back to 2014. Since then, several outbreaks have been observed worldwide, the most recent in 2024 and 2025 affecting the Indian Ocean and mainland France during the summer of 2025. At that time, a few cases of chikungunya were detected in French Guiana among people returning from these areas, but this did not lead to local transmission of the virus. In 2025, another outbreak affected the Caribbean and Latin America, resulting in the circulation of the chikungunya virus in French Guiana.

Dengue cases in Brazil continue to decline. So far in 2026, the country has registered a 75% reduction compared to the same period last year, according to health officials.

From January to April 11, 227,500 probable cases of dengue were registered in the country, well below the 916,400 in the same period of 2025. The decrease follows a trend observed since last year, when the total reached 1.7 million, after the peak of 6.6 million registered in 2024.

The result reflects the strengthening of coordinated actions between the Ministry of Health, states, and municipalities. Among the strategies is the expansion of the use of ovitraps, currently present in 1,600 municipalities, with a forecast of reaching 2,000 by the end of this year. The use of irradiated sterile insects and the expansion of the Wolbachia method, planned for 72 priority municipalities, are also progressing.

In the vaccination campaign, more than 1.4 million doses have been administered to children and adolescents aged 10 to 14, who have been receiving the vaccine since 2024. This year, the Ministry of Health began offering the national single-dose vaccine, developed by the Butantan Institute, to three pilot municipalities for the 12 to 59 age group. Healthcare professionals also receive the vaccine, totaling more than 300,000 doses administered.

The patient presented with gastrointestinal illness and has since recovered from symptoms and remains at home. PCR-based testing identified Vibrio cholerae and cholera toxin markers; however, the clinical presentation does not meet the criteria for a severe cholera (cholera gravis) . At this time, there is no evidence of a cholera outbreak. The matter is being managed as an isolated finding while investigations continue.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Hilary Wolf, stated:
“We have confirmed a single, mild case of cholera. The individual is recovering well, and this appears to be a sporadic case. Public health teams are actively investigating and taking all appropriate precautions.”

Cholera: A significant global health concern

Medical Officer of Health, Dr Samuel Williams-Rodriguez, added:
“At this time, there is no evidence of further spread, and the risk to the public remains low. We are monitoring close contacts and have increased surveillance as a precaution.”

Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the infection. The Public Health Department is working with the Cayman Islands Molecular Biology Laboratory (CIMBL) to verify results, while maintaining clinical follow-up and assessing any potential exposures.

As a precaution, surveillance across the health system has been heightened, water testing is being conducted and contact monitoring is underway. No additional cases have been identified.

Members of the public should note that Cholera is not an airborne illness. No measures are advised beyond routine hygiene practices, including:

• Regular handwashing with soap and water

• Consuming safe, treated or bottled water

• Proper food preparation and handling

Anyone experiencing persistent diarrhoea, vomiting, or signs of dehydration should seek medical care promptly.

Minister for Health, Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, stated:
“This is a precautionary response to a single sporadic case. There is no evidence of community spread, and our public health systems are actively responding. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep the public informed.”

Carlos Hurtado, Head of Epidemiology for the Santa Cruz Departmental Health Service (Sedes), stated that the outbreak originated in Cordillera province, which borders Paraguay, and resulted in the death of a 20-year-old man who had been ill for three days “due to complications.”

Hurtado also confirmed a second case “in the same area,” while another individual remains under medical observation as a suspected case of the disease.

Furthermore, he mentioned that immediately upon learning of the first infection, an epidemiological surveillance team was deployed to collect mosquito larvae and adult mosquitoes in both rural and urban areas within the Kapeirenda-Aguas Calientes sector of Cordillera province.

This was followed by additional preventive measures, including fumigation, mass vaccination of the population against yellow fever, and the containment of the epidemiological focal point.

Symptoms of yellow fever include fever, chills, headache, backache, and muscle aches, and develop 3–6 days after infection. About 15% of people infected with yellow fever virus will develop severe illness that can lead to liver disease, bleeding, shock, organ failure, yellowing skin and eyes (jaundice), and sometimes death.

Diagnosis is based on symptoms and laboratory testing. There are no medications to treat or cure yellow fever.

The case involves a 37-year-old woman, a resident of Tibás, who had recently traveled to Nicaragua. According to the epidemiological investigation, the patient entered the country during the virus’s incubation period, and is therefore classified as an imported case.

During 2026, a total of four previous cases have been confirmed: two in the canton of Esparza, one in Guanacaste, and one in Heredia.

Chagas disease is a parasitic infection that can be transmitted to humans in several ways: vector-borne (through the bite of infected triatomine bugs), oral (by ingesting food or liquids contaminated with the feces of infected triatomine bugs), transfusion, and congenital.

The disease consists of two phases. An acute phase lasts approximately two months after infection; during this phase, there are no symptoms, or if present, they are mild and nonspecific. In acute cases of vector-borne transmission, symptoms may include a skin lesion, Romaña’s sign or inoculation chagoma, fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, pallor, muscle aches, difficulty breathing, and abdominal pain.

In the chronic phase, heart problems may occur, and to a lesser extent, digestive issues such as enlargement of the esophagus or colon, as well as neurological disorders. Over time, the infection can be fatal.

There is no vaccine against Chagas disease. To prevent vector-borne transmission, vector control is the most effective method of prevention, such as improving housing to prevent triatomine bug infestation.

To prevent congenital transmission, it is important that all women of childbearing age receive counseling and early diagnosis.

The most serious finding in the report is the confirmation of 10 deaths from chikungunya in the municipalities of Dourados, Bonito, Jardim, and Fátima do Sul. Among the victims, five had some type of comorbidity.

The report also indicates 43 confirmed cases of chikungunya in pregnant women.

In the same bulletin, the State Health Department updated the dengue fever situation in the state. According to the bulletin, Mato Grosso do Sul has 2,793 probable cases, of which 454 have been confirmed. To date, there are no deaths registered or under investigation for the disease.

Over the past 14 days, the municipalities of Santa Rita do Pardo, Paraíso das Águas, Corumbá, Amambai, Bandeirantes, Guia Lopes da Laguna, Angélica, Eldorado, Itaporã, Miranda, Costa Rica, Sonora, Fátima do Sul, Ladário, Jardim, Caarapó, Rio Brilhante, Maracaju, Aquidauana, Sidrolândia, Três Lagoas, and Dourados have shown a low incidence of confirmed dengue cases.

Lastly, 223,322 doses of the dengue vaccine have already been administered to the target population. In total, Mato Grosso do Sul received 241,030 doses from the Ministry of Health.

The vaccination schedule consists of two doses, with a three-month interval between them. Vaccination is recommended for children and adolescents between 10 and 14 years, 11 months and 29 days old, an age group that accounts for the highest number of hospitalizations due to dengue among people aged 6 to 16.

The State Health Department emphasizes that the public should avoid self-medication. In case of dengue or chikungunya symptoms, the recommendation is to seek medical attention at a municipal health unit.

Nationwide in Brazil, 24,318 total probable chikungunya cases, including 15 deaths/. Another 14 deaths are under investigation.

Concening dengue, 214,855 probable dengue cases have been reported, including 79 deaths. 175 deaths are under investigation.

This is the second case registered in Brazil in 2026. The first was in São Paulo: a six-month-old child, resident of the northern zone of the capital, with a recent history of travel to La Paz, Bolivia, a country with an active outbreak of the disease. In response, a vaccination campaign was carried out in the region, with more than 600 doses administered between January and February.

The cases do not alter Brazil’s status, which remains free of endemic measles circulation. The country maintains this status even after losing its regional certification for the Americas, due to outbreaks in countries such as the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In 2025, the Ministry of Health interrupted the transmission of all 38 imported cases in the country with a rapid response based on surveillance, vaccination, and containment, a strategy recognized by the Pan American Health Organization.

According to the Directorate of Epidemiology and Risk Management of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, the victims were two boys, aged 10 and 11 months respectively—the first such deaths recorded in recent years.

The 11-month-old boy died in a rural community within the northwestern province of Quiché; his mother also tested positive for the disease.

Meanwhile, the 10-month-old boy passed away in the Department of Guatemala after being diagnosed with measles on February 27 of this year, according to authorities.

According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Health, Guatemala has recorded 3,594 cases of measles nationwide to date.

The measles outbreak was confirmed in Guatemala in January of this year following a religious event held between December 10 and 14, 2025, in the community of Santiago Atitlán

(Sololá), attended by people from the United States, Mexico, and Central America.

The Ministry of Health is maintaining a strategy known as “block vaccination” to interrupt the transmission of the disease, noting that the country’s last major outbreak occurred in 1990.

Mexico, which shares a border with Guatemala, has reported more than 8,400 measles cases and 8 deaths in the same period.

The main hotspots this season are located in the provinces of Salta and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), with 6 cases each, followed by Buenos Aires Province and Santa Fe Province with 3 cases detected in each.

In all of 2025, the country reported a total of 118 confirmed cases.

Regarding the immunization strategy, as of March 20, the National Ministry of Health had already distributed 129,300 pediatric doses of the hepatitis vaccine, intended for a target population of 402,489 people. In addition, 9,800 doses were distributed for at-risk populations and emergency situations, such as floods.

Hepatitis A is an acute liver inflammation caused by the HAV virus, whose main transmission route is fecal-oral. Before 2005, this disease was the leading cause of fulminant hepatic failure and liver transplantation in children in Argentina, with peaks of more than 40,000 cases per year. However, the inclusion of the vaccine in the National Immunization Schedule that year had a dramatic impact: the incidence fell from 113 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2004 to 0.25 in 2005, and no pediatric transplants due to this cause have been recorded since 2007.

Health officials note there in no human yellow fever cases.

Non-human primates, like the Red Howler monkey, can serve as an early indicator of the presence of the virus in the environment.

While there are no human cases, this case does signal the need for a heightened vigilance and preventive action.

4,244 vaccination brigades were deployed to do this work reaching educational units and hard-to-reach areas throughout the national territory.

“The cost of eliminating measles from a country is extremely high. In our country, we have launched the campaign jointly with the Ministry of Education. We need the population to realize that a sudden outbreak means that for every 1,000 infected people, there will be one death,” emphasized Marcela Flores Zambrana, Minister of Health and Sports.

According to an epidemiological analysis, systematic vaccination contributed significantly to the control of the epidemic, with three cases reported in the last four weeks, making a total of 647 nationwide since the start of the epidemic in April 2025.

This immunization process also reduced the number of affected municipalities, which were initially 62 in 2025 and are now only two; Santa Cruz and Warnes.

The second phase of vaccination began Friday nationwide, concentrating actions in health centers where on-site vaccination will be carried out, complemented by the scheduled deployment of personnel to educational units and remote communities.

For this stage, attention will be reinforced in 3,509 vaccination centers throughout the country, where 1,852,122 doses of SR vaccine and 480,767 of MMR are available.

According to the Ministry of Health (Minsa), 1,045 cases of leptospirosis have been reported so far this year, distributed across 23 departments and Callao. Of these, 39% are confirmed cases and 61% are probable cases , with a cumulative incidence of 3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The most affected regions include Loreto, which leads the list with 300 cases, followed by Ucayali (139) and San Martín (104).

Health officials confirmed three deaths from this disease (in the regions of Piura, San Martín, and Tumbes), while two other deaths are under investigation.

In response to this situation, the Ministry of Health (MINSA), through its various departments and in coordination with the Regional Health Directorates and Management Offices (DIRESA/GERESA), has been implementing several actions related to strengthening the capacities of healthcare personnel and improving laboratory diagnostics, case analysis, health promotion, and communication strategies.

Regarding capacity building for healthcare personnel, training sessions have been conducted at the national and regional levels on epidemiological surveillance, diagnosis, and clinical management of the disease. More than 300 healthcare professionals from Cajamarca, Ayacucho, Cusco, Piura, Ucayali, Tumbes, and San Martín participated in a national training session, significantly improving their knowledge and resulting in a notable increase in subsequent evaluation results.

Leptospirosis: Risk, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment

Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the deceased cases is being conducted to identify opportunities for improvement in care. These actions include technical meetings, issuing recommendations, and monitoring the affected regions.

Regarding the strengthening of laboratory diagnostics, the National Institute of Health (INS) is conducting quality control of diagnostic tests and will distribute 500 ELISA IgM kits for the detection of leptospirosis. In addition, the implementation of molecular (PCR) tests is being promoted in various regions of the country.

Furthermore, for health promotion and community prevention, interventions are being carried out targeting families in priority areas, promoting healthy practices through home counseling and educational sessions. The formation of community surveillance committees is also being encouraged to strengthen citizen participation.

The Ministry of Health recommends that citizens avoid contact with stagnant or contaminated water, use appropriate protection in flooded areas, maintain proper hygiene, and visit the nearest health facility if they experience symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, or general malaise.

The decision marks a step forward in public health, facilitating early treatment of affected individuals, reducing the progression of the disease, and helping to prevent chronic complications, mainly cardiac and digestive, associated with this parasitic infection.

“ Timely access to this medication allows us to act promptly, prevent serious complications, and protect the lives of thousands of people, especially in the most vulnerable regions of the country. This is an important step toward closing health gaps and advancing the control of Chagas disease in Colombia ,” stated the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo.

Benznidazole is the primary treatment for Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Its availability in the country strengthens the health system’s capacity to respond more effectively to this highly relevant public health event, which continues to affect communities in different regions of the country.

This achievement is the result of collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, through funding from the Health Research Fund (FIS), managed by the University of Antioquia. This partnership reinforces the role of research and technological development in addressing priority health problems.

In addition to expanding access to treatment, the approval of Benznidazole boosts domestic production of strategic medicines, strengthens the country’s autonomy in health, and helps ensure greater availability for those who need it.

According to the Central Laboratory of the Bureau for Public Health (BOG) and the laboratory of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo, over 1,357 individuals have tested positive, confirming local transmission and one confirmed death and another being investigated.

Despite the confirmed tally, officials estimate that the number of infected persons is much higher, given typical health‐seeking behavior patterns, hence it is believed that the number of infections may be up to three times higher, meaning the actual caseload could be approximately 4,000 cases by the second week of March.

Eight of ten districts have now reported confirmed cases of Chikungunya in Suriname: Paramaribo, Marowijne, Wanica, Nickerie, Commewijne; Tamansari, Richelieu, Para, Coronie.

It is expected that chikungunya cases might noticeably increase in the upcoming months during the rainy season in Suriname which starts from Mid- April until mil August, as rainfall creates standing water that serves for the development of Aedes mosquitoes.

Suriname’s first documented chikungunya outbreak occurred in June 2014 and lasted four months, when the virus was identified locally during the wider regional spread of chikungunya throughout the Caribbean and neighboring territories. The total number of tested cases in 2014 was 700; the current outbreak appears to progress faster than the recored 12 years ago, as total estimated cases have increased substantially.

Chikungunya disease is caused by the chikungunya virus and is spread to humans through mosquito bites. Outbreaks have occurred in countries in Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Most people infected with chikungunya virus develop some symptoms. Symptoms of chikungunya usually begin 3–7 days after a bite by an infected mosquito. The most common symptoms are fever and joint pain. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash. Most people get better within a week; however, some can have severe joint pain for months to years following acute illness.

People at risk for more severe disease include newborns infected around the time of birth, older adults (65 years or older), and people with medical conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. Death from chikungunya is rare.

There is no specific treatment for chikungunya.

According to the Department of Epidemiology of the MOH, in the first two months of 2026, 1,232 accumulated cases of dengue have been registered nationwide.

Of that number, 1,081 cases are without warning signs, while 146 present warning signs and 5 cases of severe dengue are reported.

The Metropolitan Region reports the most with 337 cases; followed by Colón with 140 cases; Bocas del Toro with 124 cases; San Miguelito with 121 cases; Panama West with 119 cases; and Panama East with 104 cases.

The Ministry of Health continues to intensify operations throughout the country during 2026, relying on the Vector Control team and Health Promotion strategies to reduce dengue cases.

Emphasis is placed on the importance of citizen participation in eliminating all mosquito breeding grounds, both inside and around homes.

The population is also urged to eliminate all unused containers that can accumulate water (cans, bottles, tires, among others), cover containers used for water collection, and clean the areas around homes regularly.

The main symptoms of dengue fever include fever, headache, general malaise, muscle aches, and eye pain. The public is advised not to self-medicate and to seek medical attention at a health center if they suspect they have the disease, paying particular attention to warning signs.
