Afghanistan health officials reported an additional wild poliovirus (WPV-1) case this past week, bringing the total confirmed cases to 16 in 2026 to date.
This case is a two-year-old girl from the Sarkhom area of Tirinkot, Uruzgan province.
The child developed symptoms several months ago and has suffered paralysis in her legs, officials said.
This brings the total number of WPV-1 cases to 19 globally (Afghanistan- 16 and Pakistan- 3).
Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries where wild poliovirus remains endemic.
