According to the head of the health information office at the provincial health division (DPS) in South Kivu province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 2,985 cases of mpox, or monkeypox have already been recorded since January 2024.
Among these cases, 20 deaths have already been recorded throughout the province.
Cases have been recorded in 28 of the 34 health zones in the province of South Kivu.
Justin Bengehya, head of the health information office says sexuality is the factor that affects the spread, especially in mining areas.
He urges the population to continue to respect hygiene measures and to go to the hospital if they show signs of Monkeypox.

Since the beginning of the year, DRC has reported 13,791 total cases (2628 confirmed and 11,163 suspected) and 450 fatalities (CFR 3.3%) have bee reported from 25 of the 26 provinces in DRC. The clade I mpox strain was isolated from confirmed cases.
