Angola cholera outbreak tops 3,000 cases in one month, Luanda accounts for half the cases
In a follow-up on the cholera outbreak in Angola that was declared on January 7, 2025, the Ministry of Health now reports 3,043 cases and 101 deaths as of February 9.
Luanda province, hone to the capital city of the same name, has accounted for nearly half the total cases with 1501.
10 out of the 21 provinces in the country are affected. (Cuanza Sul, Cunene, Bengo, Zaire, Cuanza Norte, Malanje, Luanda, Huila, Huambo and Icolo e Bengo). And 42 out of 326 municipalities are affected.
The first case was registered in the Cacuaco Municipality of Luanda Province, which is located in a suburban area, with a population of around 1,225,220 inhabitants.
Angola has battled cholera outbreaks in the past. After a period without any outbreaks between 1995 and 2000, the country experienced a huge outbreak in 2011 resulting in 2284 cases and 181 deaths. The most recent outbreak occurred between 2016 and 2017 affected Cabinda, Luanda and Zaire provinces with a total of 252 cases and 11 deaths.
