On Wednesday, July 9, health authorities in Bucharest reported two suspicious, unconfirmed human anthrax cases in people who reported that they handled and consumed sheep meat from their own household.
By the next evening, officials with the the National Institute for Medical-Military Research and Development "Cantacuzino" confirmed the diagnosis. The two patients are currently hospitalized at the Matei BalÈ™ National Institute for Infectious Diseases in Bucharest.
They are in stable condition and under medical supervision.
One of the patients has a mild cutaneous form of anthrax, while the second, his son, is experiencing a moderate form of the disease without risk of complications. According to the ministry, both patients received appropriate treatment and care from the moment anthrax was suspected.
