What some may consider the biggest infectious disease story of the year, the dengue epidemic in Bangladesh in 2023 closes out the year with 321,179 total hospitalizations and 1,705 deaths (a case fatality of 0.53%).
34% of the cases were reported in the city of Dhaka, while 66% of the cases were reported outside the city.
Cases really took off in July when 43,854 cases were reported. The cases mounted in subsequent months—August (71,976), September (79,598), October (67,769) and November (40,716).
The previous high for a single year of 101,354 cases was registered in 2019. The former annual dengue death toll record was 281 in 2022.
