A 14-year-old adolescent died from yellow fever in the La Paz municipality of Caranavi, and it is presumed that this minor was not immunized against the disease, according to the management of the Caranavi municipal hospital.
“This is a male patient who arrived at our emergency service in very bad condition and after a few hours he died. A positive case of yellow fever has been confirmed,” reported the director of the Yungueño hospital, Henry Mamani.
The medical report indicates that the teenager arrived with symptoms at the emergency area of the Caranavi hospital, and after some medical tests he died. The doctors determined that he had yellow fever.
“This is because unfortunately there is a population that does not receive the vaccine. “This teenager apparently would not have the vaccine,” he said.
The doctor recommended that parents who live in the tropical part of La Paz take their children to health centers to be vaccinated against yellow fever.
Yellow fever is spread by a species of common mosquito that lives in tropical places. It is advisable to get vaccinated before traveling to certain regions of the country.
Moderate cases cause fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Severe cases can cause fatal kidney, liver, and heart disorders.
There is no specific treatment for the disease, but rather it consists of controlling the symptoms and limiting complications.
After three years of epidemiological silence, the department of La Paz reported a case of yellow fever. It was a young man, 21 years old who, for work reasons, went to the north of La Paz, entering into the mountains, where he was bitten by the mosquito. He arrived in the city of El Alto, entering the Santiago II Hospital of the National Health Fund on the 23rd of April 2024, dying two days later. He had no underlying illnesses.
