Brazil MOH projects 1,600 leptospirosis cases in Rio Grande do Sul
In a follow-up on the leptospirosis outbreak in Rio Grande do Sul, the Brazil Ministry of Health (MOH) estimates up to 1,600 cases of leptospirosis registered in the state due to the floods that hit municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul over the last few weeks.
The number is four times greater than the total number of cases of the disease recorded throughout 2023 in the state (400), according to Federal Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade.
“Health care is being provided and it is also essential, naturally, that people do not self-medicate”, highlighted Nísia.
Representatives from the Ministry of Health met this week with municipal managers from the region, representatives from the National Force of the Unified Health System (SUS), and scientific societies from Rio Grande do Sul to discuss actions to combat pathologies caused by the floods and storms that have hit the state in recent weeks.
