According to data released from the Ministry of Health, Brazil recorded 945 confirmed or probable cases of mpox. This number exceeds the total number of cases reported throughout the whole of last year, when 853 cases were recorded. There are also 264 suspected cases of the disease.
The report states the cities with the most confirmed and probable cases include São Paulo (343 or 36.3%), Rio de Janeiro (160 or 16.9%), Belo Horizonte (43 or 4.6%), Salvador (28 or 3%) and Brasília (20 or 2.1%).
According to the report, males continue to account for most cases (897 or 94.9%) in the age group of 18 to 39 years (679 or 75.7%). Only one case was registered in the age group up to 4 years. To date, no confirmed or probable cases have been registered in pregnant women.
The ministry also reports 69 hospitalizations due to mpox (7.3% of total cases), 37 (3.9%) for clinical management and eight (0.8%) for isolation, while in 24 cases (2.5%) the reason for hospitalization was not described. In addition, five cases (0.5%) required hospitalization in an intensive care unit (ICU).
According to the ministry, no deaths from mpox have been recorded in Brazil this year. There have also been no cases of the new variant 1b reported in the country.
