Brazil: Newcastle disease confirmed on farm in Rio Grande do Sul
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) has confirmed the identification of an outbreak of Newcastle disease (ND), which is transmitted by a virus and affects wild and commercial birds. Highly contagious, the disease has respiratory symptoms, often followed by nervous symptoms, diarrhea and edema in the head of these animals. The identification occurred on a commercial poultry farm, located in the municipality of Anta Gorda, in Rio Grande do Sul.
According to the ministry, the positive diagnosis was made this Wednesday (17), at 4 pm, by the Federal Laboratory of Agricultural Defense of São Paulo (LFDA-SP), recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) as an international reference laboratory for the diagnosis of DNC.
The investigation into the case was carried out by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation of Rio Grande do Sul (Seapi), which sent the samples for laboratory analysis.
The ministry reported that, after the initial response, the poultry establishment was immediately closed, including the suspension of the movement of birds.

In addition, additional investigation will be carried out within a 10-kilometer radius around the area where the outbreak occurred, in addition to other measures that may be necessary according to the epidemiological assessment.
According to the ministry, the consumption of poultry products inspected by the Official Veterinary Service (SVO) remains safe and without contraindications.
Newcastle disease
ND is caused by infection with a virus belonging to the avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 (APMV-1) group, which is virulent in commercially produced poultry. In addition to birds, it can also affect reptiles, mammals, and even humans.
The last confirmed cases in Brazil occurred in 2006 and in subsistence birds, in the states of Amazonas, Mato Grosso and Rio Grande do Sul.
