Brazil: Rio Grande do Sul records more than 41,000 cases of dengue fever in 2025
In Rio Grande do Sul state, dengue remains a concern. Of the 123,219 reports issued by Rio Grande do Sul in 2025, 41,724 were confirmed cases of the disease, 40,954 had positive results, and 39,080 were discarded. According to the State Health Department (SES), 1,461 cases remain under investigation at the Rio Grande do Sul Central Laboratory (Lacen RS).
In 2025, the presence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito was recorded in 477 cities in Rio Grande do Sul. Another indicator being monitored is the number of deaths from dengue fever. To date, 51 deaths from the disease have been recorded.
The municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul with recorded deaths are Porto Alegre (24), Cachoeira do Sul (5), Viamão (4), Viamão (4), Alvorada (3), Canoas (3), Sapucaia do Sul (3), Cachoeirinha (2), Aratiba (1), Erechim (1), Estrela (1), Harmonia (1), Nova Araçá (1), Novo Hamburgo (1) and Santo Ângelo (1).
Given the current situation, the SES urges “the population to seek medical attention at health services as soon as symptoms appear. This way, the disease can worsen and lead to death.” Symptoms include:
High fever lasting two to seven days;
Pain behind the eyes;
Headache;
Body and joint pain;
Vomiting;
Diarrhea;
General malaise;
Red spots on the skin, with or without itching.
The public is advised to:
Always keep the water tank closed.
Fill pots and plant pots with sand to the brim.
Do not let rainwater accumulate in containers.
Keep water barrels and casks covered
Store bottles upside down
Collect your waste
Use repellent
Use insecticide in dark places (near the ground and near the pool)
Be careful with swimming pools, especially plastic ones
