Rio de Janeiro state
The government of Rio de Janeiro declared this Wednesday a dengue epidemic in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
The governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro, reported that the state has 308 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which constitutes an epidemic.
There are more than 49,000 cases of the disease in the state this year, 20 times higher than expected, with four confirmed deaths. The 2024 numbers already represent 96% of all cases registered in 2023.
The state announced the creation of a Health Emergency Operations Center specific to dengue, which will unite all health sectors, including Health Surveillance, to provide rapid responses to municipalities. In addition, there will be an expansion to 22 hydration rooms and daily reinforcement of doctors and nurses in the state UPAs.
“We still have a projection of an increase in cases for the next six to ten weeks. In a positive scenario, six weeks. In a negative scenario, ten weeks. Our forecast is for a cumulative total of around 150,000 cases by May. We will still have difficult weeks”, said Castro.
