Canada reports Salmonella outbreak linked to Sweet Cream brand mini pastries
Dozens of cases reported in 5 provinces
Canadian public health authorities are reporting a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak linked to Sweet Cream brand mini pastries.
As of January 19, 61 laboratory-confirmed cases of illness linked to this outbreak have been reported in five provinces: British Columbia (4), Alberta (2), Ontario (21), Quebec (33) and New Brunswick (1).
People became sick between late September 2024 and mid-December 2024. Of the cases reported, 17 people have been hospitalized and there are no deaths.
The affected product was recalled on January 18. Many people who became sick reported eating mini pastries at catered events or other establishments (bakeries, hotels, restaurants among others) where the recalled product was served.
People who became sick are between 3 and 88 years old. More than half of them are female (61%).

Officials offer the following advice to individuals, as well as retailers, distributors and food service establishments such as bakeries, hotels, restaurants, cafeterias as well as facilities such as hospitals and retirement residences across Canada:
Check to see if you have the recalled products in your home or establishment by looking for the specific product name and size, UPC and codes in the recall alert.
Do not consume, serve, use, sell or distribute recalled products.
Throw out or return recalled products to the location where they were purchased. Consumers or establishments who are unsure if they have purchased the recalled products are advised to contact their retailer or supplier where the products were purchased.
Do not cook food for other people if you've been diagnosed with a Salmonella infection or any other gastrointestinal illness.
Contact your health care provider if you think you're experiencing symptoms of Salmonella infection.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
