Chikungunya in Reunion: More than 1,000 cases reported as the epidemic continues at a sustained pace
In a follow-up on the chikungunya outbreak in La Reunion, according to ARS Reunion, 362 new locally acquired chikungunya cases were reported, bringing the total to 1,069 indigenous cases recorded since August 2024, including 927 since the start of the 2025.
The municipalities of Tampon and Étang-Salé still have the highest number of cases, with 228 and 169 cases respectively since the start of the year.
The presence of the virus is much more marked in Tampon, with an increase of more than 80% in cases.
The circulation of the virus is progressing strongly:
to the Oars,
in Little Island,
in Saint-Denis,
in Saint-Joseph,
in Saint-Louis,
in Saint-Paul
in Saint-Philippe.
The health impact remains relatively low: 8 visits to the emergency room and 7 hospitalizations.
The current period of the austral summer is very favourable to the spread of dengue and chikungunya, particularly with the arrival of recent rains. Given the current epidemic dynamics, dissemination to the entire island seems likely in the coming weeks.
