Costa Rica dengue update
Increases in dengue cases and the circulation of dengue serotypes 3 or 4 are reported
In a follow-up on the dengue fever situation in Costa Rica this year, the Ministry of Health (MOH) now reports 18,194 cases through October 21.
The dengue cases registered this year are concentrated in the Huetar Caribe region with 5,218 cases, followed by the Central North with 4,110 cases and the Central Pacific with 2,556 cases.
Cantons across the country report increases in dengue cases and the circulation of dengue serotypes 3 or 4 are reported.
The ministry has been working on actions to strengthen the prevention of this disease. Among the measures implemented are:
1. Distribution of educational material.
2. Adequate care for patients, following guidelines and care protocols established by the Ministry of Health.
3. Epidemiological analysis of vector diseases, such as mosquitoes in areas where these diseases are common.
4. There are laboratories for sample processing.
5. The Integrated Vector Strategies are implemented from the Health Governing Areas.
6. Institutional Environmental Management Program and the Comprehensive Waste Management Program.
7. Fumigation campaigns.
8. Alliance with different institutions and companies, which have been part of the important fight against the mosquito that causes Dengue.
The Ministry of Health calls on the population to constantly clean and check the containers in which water is stored from their homes.
Other mosquito-borne diseases
The MOH also reports 67 chikungunya cases, 29 Zika virus cases and 509 malaria cases through October 21 this year.
