The Costa Rica Ministry of Health reports the confirmation of a positive case of chikungunya in the country in a 24-year-old Costa Rican man, a resident of Esparza, Puntarenas.
The patient is not currently experiencing any health complications.
This is the first chikungunya case reported in Costa Rica in nine years.
The Ministry of Health is began on Thursday three cycles of fumigation in the community of Esparza in order to contain the spread of the disease.
The interventions are being carried out in the town of Espíritu Santo and will extend throughout the Esparza sector through next week or more.
Chikungunya is a disease caused by a virus transmitted by mosquito bites. The most common symptoms are: High fever (greater than 39°C); Joint pain and swelling; Headache and Nausea and general malaise.
The Ministry of Health maintains active epidemiological surveillance and coordinates actions for mosquito control, in order to protect the population and prevent the spread of the disease.
The public is advised to: Use mosquito repellent; Wear long-sleeved clothing; Use mosquito nets and Eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, such as containers with stagnant water.
