It has been more than two decades since Costa Rica has reported the circulation of the DENV3 and DENV4 serotypes, but in 2023, they are the predominant strains reported in the country which reported all four types circulating.
According to the report of serotypes identified by the National Reference Center for Virology (CNRV) of INCIENSA, as of November 28, 2023, 2,305 cases of dengue have been confirmed by PCR test—Current data shows 536 cases of type 1, 393 of type 2, 545 of type 3, and a stark 831 cases of type 4.
Since the beginning of the year, the Costa Rica Ministry of Health has reported 24,941 cases, a 233 percent increase over last years total (7,485).
The regions with the highest number of dengue cases recorded this year are; the Huetar Caribe region with 6,055 cases, followed by the Central North with 5,592 cases and Chorotega with 3,819 cases.
The Ministry of Health calls on the population to constantly clean and empty the containers in which water is stored for domestic use, check and clean canoes and all black plastic in the yards of homes, as well as put tires in disuse indoors or take them to the respective collection sites.
