The Statens Serum Institut (SSI) reports after several years of higher mortality and more hospitalizations than influenza, Covid-19 is now at the same level, according to new data.
This is shown by data from the winter season 2024/25, when mortality was the same for the two diseases- for both groups, the risk of dying within 30 days of hospitalization was 10-11 percent, and thus the difference between the two diseases has now been equalized.
“What we are seeing is that our immune defense against Covid-19 has gradually caught up, and Covid-19 seems to have found its level as a recurring disease in line with influenza,” says Anders Hviid, head of department at SSI and senior author on the study.
He adds:
“However, both diseases must continue to be taken seriously, and vaccination is still important.”
SSI assesses that the figures emphasize the need to continue to offer seasonal vaccination to the elderly and vulnerable against both COVID-19 and influenza.
The analysis from SSI shows that 6,326 people were hospitalized with influenza and 4,562 with COVID-19 during the entire period from June 8, 2024 to June 1, 2025.
