Federal health officials report yesterday that 6,707 laboratory-confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported from 45 states since May 1.
These people became sick after eating food in the United States and did not report any international travel during the 14 days before they got sick.
423 people required hospitalization for their illness and no deaths were reported.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is aware of more than 11,500 additional cases that are not laboratory confirmed or require further investigation and analysis, such as ruling out international travel. Many of the additional cases have been reported by Michigan (10,077) and Ohio (2,576).
Officials are investigating multiple clusters of Cyclospora cases, including one multistate outbreak affecting 9 states linked to iceberg lettuce.
