Dengue reported on Easter Island
3 locally transmitted cases confirmed
The Chile Ministry of Health reports on 3 confirmed indigenous cases of dengue on Easter Island. Due to this, measures and actions have been established in the presence of the disease.
The head of the Department. From Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, Christian García, met with the Eastern Health Service, Seremi of the V region and the provincial office of Easter Island and Hanga Roa Hospital. The Zoonosis team, the Disease Prevention and Control divisions, and Primary Care were also present at the meeting; the Office of International Health Regulations.
The measures adopted are the following:
– Reinforcement of surveillance of emergency consultations with febrile syndrome.
– Isolation of cases to interrupt viral circulation and clinical follow-up of them.
– Strengthening the vector control measures carried out in the perifocos of displacement of the cases and in those places considered to be of highest risk.
– Provision of repellents by the provincial office.
– Evaluation of feverish travelers entering the Island, both by air and sea.
Health teams continue with the epidemiological investigation due to the possibility of other possible cases. Samples are being requested from all people who have consulted for fever without a known source during the last two weeks.

At the national level, as of March 11, 2024, 86 cases of dengue have been confirmed, all imported and presenting a mild course of the disease, without warning signs or serious symptoms.
In 2002, an epidemic of classic Dengue (DENV-1) occurred unexpectedly on Easter Island, where it had never been detected before. It had reappeared a number of times since then.
