Dominican Republic reports decrease in leptospirosis cases early in 2026
The Dominican Republic Ministry of Health reported that during the first five epidemiological weeks of 2026, there has been a decrease in confirmed cases of leptospirosis compared to the same period in 2025.
According to official data, while one confirmed case was reported during epidemiological week 5 of 2025, no cases were reported during the same week of 2026. The cumulative total for 2026 is 17, while 28 cases were reported for 2025.
The Ministry of Public Health, through the Provincial Health Directorates, has intensified surveillance by actively searching for febrile cases, expanding sample collection, and timely notification through the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE).
At the community level, operations are underway to clean ravines, control rodents, distribute chlorine, and conduct educational activities focused on prevention. Furthermore, coordination with municipalities and response agencies has enabled the management of stagnant water and the removal of debris—key actions for reducing environmental exposure, limiting transmission, and preventing complications and deaths from leptospirosis.
