According to the coordinating physician of the leprosy and tuberculosis control program, Justin Mukonkole, more than 13,000 cases of tuberculosis including 343 deaths were recorded during 2024 in the 36 health zones in Ituri province, in the Northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The health authority indicated that the Bunia health zone remains at the top of the thirty-six health zones, and the Djugu territory remains at the top in terms of administrative entities with 5,618, 71% of people affected by tuberculosis.
Despite the persistence of tuberculosis in Ituri province, which remains a permanent danger for the population, Justin Mukonkole nevertheless put forward a rate of 84% of patients having experienced favorable therapeutic success.
To put an end to this scourge, people with prolonged coughs are called upon to voluntarily get tested in the nearest health facilities, reaffirming that tuberculosis treatment is free throughout the province of Ituri.
