UPDATE: Local media reported Saturday night that three new cases of measles have been confirmed at Manatee Bay Elementary, bringing the total to four.
The Florida Department of Health has reported the first measles case of the year.
According to state health data, a confirmed case was reported in a child age 5-9 years in Broward County. Officials also note that the infection was acquired in Florida.
Media outlets report the case is a third grade student at Manatee Bay Elementary in Weston. The child had no travel history.
Broward County School’s spokesman John Sullivan said in a statement to local media:
“The health, safety and welfare of our students and staff are always our priorities. The District is working closely with the Florida Department of Health in Broward County regarding the case of measles at Manatee Bay Elementary School. The school’s leadership is also in communication with families regarding the situation and taking all necessary precautions in conjunction with the health department’s guidance.”
In 2023, Florida saw two measles cases—one in Seminole County and one in Miami-Dade County—both in September 2023.
Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a total of 20 measles cases in 11 states.
