In a follow-up on the West Nile virus (WNV) situation in Greece in 2025, since the beginning of the 2025 period, until 9/17/2025, a total of eighty-three (83) domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed and investigated in Greece, of which sixty-eight (68) cases presented Central Nervous System manifestations (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis) and fifteen (15) cases had mild manifestations/no CNS manifestations.
During the last week, eight new domestic cases were diagnosed/reported. Two imported cases of the infection, exposed to other countries abroad (one in Serbia and one in Italy), have also been recorded, which are not included in the further analysis. Seven (7) deaths have been recorded in patients with viral infection and CNS manifestations, aged over 65 years (median age of death: 80 years, range: 66 - 86 years).
