India: Kerala reports uptick in dengue
State already battling Nipah virus and outbreaks of malaria and shigella
Kerala state, in southwest India, has been plagued with outbreaks in recent years- Nipah virus, shigellosis, malaria, Naegleria fowleri and leptospirosis.
The latest infectious disease the state has reported increases in is dengue fever.
With the arrival of the monsoon, single-day tallies have routinely exceeded 60–100 confirmed cases, supplemented by hundreds of patients hospitalized under observation with suspected symptoms.
Since the beginning of the year, Kerala has reported 3,565 confirmed and 10, 428 probable cases of dengue. More than half the confirmed cases have been reported since May.
17 dengue deaths have been reported to date.
Epidemiological data from the Kerala Directorate of Health Services (DHS) indicates that the highly virulent DENV-2 strain remains the dominant cause of infection in the state, alongside significant circulation of DENV-1, DENV-3, and DENV-4.
The Kerala Health Department, led by Health Minister K. Muraleedharan, has admitted that lapses in pre-monsoon sanitation—disrupted earlier in the year due to local and assembly election cycles—contributed to the rapid spread of vectors. In response, the government has launched a strict biosecurity protocol:
State-Wide “Dry Day” Campaign: A recurring three-day campaign is being enforced over weekends to systematically eliminate stagnant water. Friday focuses on clearing school campuses, Saturday targets public and private offices, and Sunday relies on community-level household cleaning.
Outbreak Calendar: The government announced plans to implement a regional “outbreak calendar” to map seasonal disease patterns and shift the state’s public health apparatus from reactive firefighting to predictive prevention.
Public Health Advisories: Health officials urge parents not to send children exhibiting fever symptoms to school. Citizens are advised to seek early medical intervention, as the initial symptoms of dengue and leptospirosis overlap, and delayed treatment drastically increases the risk of severe complications.
