The Italy National Institute of Health reported an additional 51 new human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) between 12 and 18 September 2024, bringing the total human cases to 382 since May.
Of these, 222 were neuroinvasive (12 Piemonte, 9 Lombardia, 38 Veneto, 5 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 131 Emilia-Romagna, 1 Lazio, 2 Abruzzo, 11 Campania, 2 Puglia, 2 Calabria, 1 Sardegna, 2 imported cases from the United States, 5 from Albania and 1 from Romania).
Among the confirmed cases, 16 deaths were reported (3 Piemonte, 1 Lombardia, 7 Veneto, 1 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 3 Emilia-Romagna, 1 Calabria).
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), since the start of 2024, and as of 25 September 2024, human cases of WNV infection have been reported by 13 EU/EEA countries and five EU-neighboring countries. In the EU/EEA, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Romania, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain reported WNV infections. From EU-neighboring countries, Albania, Kosovo*, North Macedonia, Serbia and Türkiye reported WNV infections.
