In a follow-up on the syphilis situation in Japan this year, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) reports 14,906 total cases in 2023, a record high for the third consecutive year.
Tokyo accounted for the most cases with 3,658 cases, followed by Osaka (1,967), Fukuoka (939), Aichi (817) and Hokkaido (677).
Last year, the number of reported syphilis patients hit a record high with 13,228 total cases in 2022, the first time eclipsing the 10,000 mark.
