According to ARS La Réunion, this year, the start of the seasonal upsurge of leptospirosis is later and lower than in 2024: between January 1 and April 10, 2025, 59 cases were reported.
During the week of April 7, the number of weekly cases increased with 17 new cases recorded.
The whole island is affected by leptospirosis. The South region is particularly affected: 43% of cases (mainly in Tampon and Saint-Louis) and the West region: 24% of cases (mainly in Saint-Paul).
Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria present in water and mud contaminated by the urine of infected animals. After heavy rains, gardening at home or recreational activities in fresh water are particularly at risk.
Farmers and breeders are also exposed due to their professional activity.
In view of the resurgence of cases and the rainy season, the ARS La Réunion and Santé Publique France recommend increased vigilance to the population: protect yourself with simple actions, consult your doctor as soon as symptoms appear, indicating whether a risky activity has been carried out.
