The Macau Health Bureau received a report of a local dengue fever case on July 5, and called on residents near the Kida Building, No. 7, Seaside New Street, Macau to take preventive measures to strengthen prevention of dengue fever.
The patient is a 72-year-old female, a Macao resident, living in Kida Building, No. 7, Seaside New Street, Macau. On July 1, she went to the emergency department of Jing Xi for fever and joint pain. After taking medicine, her fever subsided. On July 4, she found rashes and skin bleeding spots on her hands and feet and went to the Jing Wu Internal Medicine Department for treatment. No hospitalization was required.
Her blood sample was tested by the Public Health Laboratory of the Health Bureau and confirmed to be dengue fever type I. The patient's condition is currently stable, and her family members living with her are not unwell. She has no history of traveling abroad during the incubation period and only moves around the address on a daily basis. According to epidemiological analysis, the case is listed as the first local dengue fever case in Macao this year.
In order to reduce and cut off the spread as soon as possible, the Health Bureau has sent personnel to the patient's address to carry out preventive mosquito control work. During the operation, when assisting residents to check common household water containers such as vases and flower pots, it was found that some residents' containers had mosquito larvae breeding; at the same time, it was found that some public areas had water containers that were not covered or inverted, which had bred mosquitoes and increased the risk of dengue fever transmission.
The Health Bureau staff immediately assisted residents in handling and carried out relevant publicity and education. In addition, case searches, breeding source inspections and publicity and education will be carried out near the main activity locations of patients in the near future, as well as preventive mosquito control work.
The Health Bureau emphasized that dengue fever is transmitted by the bites of virus-carrying Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Removing breeding sources is the most effective preventive measure. Residents are once again called on to pay attention to strengthening the removal of stagnant water to prevent mosquito breeding.
Macao has also entered the risk season for dengue fever transmission. There are also many local transmission cases in neighboring Guangdong Province.
Residents are reminded not to take it lightly and the following appeals are made:
1. Neighboring residents should actively cooperate and take mosquito control and prevention measures together;
2. Use screens, mosquito nets or air conditioning at home to reduce the chance of being bitten by mosquitoes;
3. Pay attention to environmental hygiene, remove stagnant water in the workplace and around the home, and prevent mosquito breeding;
4. If you go to dengue fever-endemic areas, you should wear light-colored long-sleeved shirts and pants, stay in places with air conditioning or mosquito repellents, and use mosquito repellent when going out to prevent mosquito bites;
5. Regardless of whether you have a history of travel abroad, if you have suspected dengue fever symptoms such as fever and rash, you should seek medical attention in time, and inform the doctor of your place of residence or travel history;
6. Doctors should conduct tests and reports on suspected dengue fever patients in a timely manner. The Public Health Laboratory of the Health Bureau provides free dengue fever testing services to all medical institutions.
