In a follow-up on the measles epidemic in Kasai-Oriental province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), provincial health authorities reported 338 new measles cases during the last epidemiological week, confirming a significant resurgence of the disease in several health zones.
This increase is causing serious concern within the provincial government. Measles, a highly contagious disease, primarily affects unvaccinated children and can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly. Health officials fear a wider spread if urgent measures are not strengthened. Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, the provincial government spokesperson emphasized the seriousness of the situation.
“The increase in measles cases is very worrying. During the last epidemiological week, at least 338 cases were recorded. And the ministry has invited parents to have their children vaccinated,” he said, reading from the official report.
Health authorities are emphasizing vaccination as the primary means of prevention. They are urging parents to check their children’s vaccination status and to visit health facilities for routine immunizations or to participate in ongoing campaigns.
Since the beginning of the year, DRC have reported 20,231 total measles cases and 238 deaths.
