The deputy director of Epidemiology of the State Secretariat of Health, Gumaro Barrios Gallegos reported that in the city of Chihuahua, in the five months of 2024, a total of 17 cases of rickettsiosis were diagnosed, of which five lost their lives due to the infection.
Barrios Gallegos highlighted that in the last decade there has been an increase in cases diagnosed with rickettsiosis among the Chihuahuan population, which at the state level has claimed the lives of 14 people out of the 30 confirmed cases this year in the state.
The head of Epidemiology gave a breakdown of the confirmed cases of rickettsiosis, among in which the city of Chihuahua heads the list with 17 people diagnosed from January to May of this year; The rest of the cases are distributed among the municipalities of Juárez (9 cases), Aquiles Serdán (2) and Meoqui (2).
Regarding deaths, five were recorded in the city of Chihuahua, seven in Ciudad Juárez and in Aquiles Serdán and Meoqui, one death in each of the municipalities.

“Given all this data, we urge the population to take all precautions around the caring for people, caring for pets, as responsible owners, and also, hygiene and cleaning of backyards, because the tick takes refuge in the weeds, in the gaps of windows and doors; and in the cracks in the walls,” he warned.
Likewise, he urged to keep the surroundings of the homes as clean as possible and remove all the weeds; In relation to pets, he invited them to have the necessary care, such as taking them to the veterinarian to have their vaccines, their medications, their baths with tick-killing products.
