The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) is informing residents of a recently confirmed locally-acquired case of dengue. DOH-Miami-Dade and Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control are coordinating surveillance, prevention, and control efforts.
There are now three locally acquired dengue cases reported in the state- other cases were from Hillsborough County and Palm Beach County.
To date, 49 travel associated dengue cases have ben reported throughout the state.
Dengue can present as a flu-like illness with severe muscle aches and joint pain, fever, and sometimes a rash. Usually, there are no respiratory symptoms. Symptoms of dengue will appear within 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Dengue fever is not contagious but is transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito.
DOH-Miami-Dade reminds the community to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes by taking these basic precautions.
