Minnesota is seeing an increase in pertussis cases, especially in the seven-county Metro area, according to the Department of Health (DOH).
From the beginning of the year through May 9, the DOH reports 54 pertussis cases.
Of this total, half the cases, 27, were reported from Hennepin County.
The median age of the recent cluster of cases is 16 years old.
This compares to 61 cases reported in all of 2023.
Whooping cough (pertussis) can cause serious illness in people of all ages but is most dangerous for babies.
Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect against pertussis.
Certainly possible.
I'm afraid it's not wholly being reported with the distractions of COVID. My son has suspected whooping cough and his daycare didn't even tell the.other kids??? Public health department didn't investigate either. Makes me think a lot more people have this and don't realize it.
