Morocco health authorities report an update recently on a measles epidemic that began in the Souss-Massa region in October 2023.
Since October 2023, 19,515 measles cases and 107 virus-related deaths have been recorded in Morocco, according to Minister of Health and Social Protection Amine Tahraoui.
In 2024 alone, 17,999 cumulative cases (5,094 confirmed) and 104 deaths have been reported in all 12 regions of Morocco through December 13, 2024.
According to Tahraoui, children under 12 account for nearly half of the deaths.
Tahraoui attributes the outbreak to the decline in vaccination coverage, generally observed since the Covid-19 health crisis in 2020, along with vaccination hesitancy.
