In a follow-up on the wild poliovirus (WPV-1) situation in Pakistan, health officials report a confirmed polio case in District Torghar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This is the seventh case of 2025 in Pakistan.
To date, WPV-1 cases have been reported from Sindh province (4), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (2) and Punjab (1).
In 2024, a total of 74 cases were reported. Of these, 27 were from Balochistan, 23 from Sindh, 22 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
The second nationwide (NID) Polio campaign of the year is currently in progress in the country from April 21 to 27, aiming to vaccinate 45.4 million children under the age of five across the country. This will be followed by another nationwide campaign from May 26 to June 1. District Torghar is included in both these vaccination campaigns, along with all other districts of the country.
Globally, nine WPV-1 cases have been reported: Seven from Pakistan and two in Afghanistan.
Polio is a paralyzing disease that has no cure. Multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine and completion of the routine vaccination schedule for all children under the age of five is essential to provide children high immunity against this terrible disease.
