Paraguay reports 95,000 dengue cases in first 5 weeks
A 425% increase compared to the last 5-year average for the same period in the country
The updated report from the General Directorate of Health Surveillance in Paraguay this Friday indicates that in the last three weeks, 58,737 total dengue cases were registered nationwide, of which 6,460 were confirmed cases of dengue.
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), from January 1 to February 3, 95,381 cases were reported (the second most in the region of the Americas, behind only Brazil), which represents an increase of 425% compared to the last 5-year average for the same period in the country.
Paraguay officials report 88% of the cases detected correspond to DENV-2, which is the predominant serotype in the national territory.
The report states that 89% of dengue notifications are concentrated in Central, Asunción, Itapúa, Paraguarí, Cordillera, Alto Paraná, Caaguazú and Guairá.
The age group most affected by the dengue virus is 5 to 9 years old, which corresponds to 16% of those hospitalized, followed by the age group of 10 to 14 years.
The total dengue deaths remain at 39.
PAHO reports between January 1 and February 3 of 2024, 673,267 dengue cases were reported in the Region of the Americas, with 0.10% of them being severe cases and a case fatality rate of 0.015%. This figure represents an increase of 157% compared to the same period in 2023 and 225% compared to the last 5-year average in the Region.
