Chikungunya
The Philippines Department of Health’s Epidemiology Bureau reports a 36 percent increase in chikungunya cases year to date compared to the same period in 2025.
From the beginning of the year through August 22, 901 cases were reported, compared to 662 cases reported last year.
Among the reported cases, 52 (6%) were confirmed, while 849 (94%) were classified as suspected.
Chikungunya epidemic risk: A call to action
Region VIII, I, and CALABARZON recorded the highest number of cases. Region VIII recorded the highest increase in cases of 6650% from 6 cases last year to 405 this year. Region I, or the Ilocos region has recorded 262 cases, a 671% increase compared to the 34 cases recorded last year at this time.
Region VIII, or the Eastern Visayas have exceeded thresholds for chikungunya. Earlier this year, Samar province reported an outbreak, which is now considered under control.
No deaths were reported this year, a 100% decrease from one death (CFR: 0.16%) reported in the same period last year.
Cases have decreased significantly in recent weeks. There is a 41% decrease from July 26 to August 8, with 55 cases reported, compared to July 12 to July 25, which had 94 cases. The number of cases recorded from the recent weeks, August 9 to August 22, 2026 was 10 cases.
