The Provincial Health Office (PHO) Samar has issued a health advisory urging the public to remain vigilant against Chikungunya, a viral disease transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes.
Two villages in the municipality of Gandara in Samar have been placed under Code Red after 84 people reportedly contracted the mosquito-borne disease chikungunya.
Data from the Gandara rural health unit showed all 84 confirmed cases were recorded in the villages of Ngoso and Catorse de Agosto, which have been under Code Red since June 30.
Chikungunya epidemic risk: A call to action
Health officials said the first case was detected in May.
Residents are encouraged to recognize the early signs and symptoms, seek prompt medical consultation, and avoid self-medication.
This disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito and can cause high fever, severe joint pain, and other symptoms.

The PHO also calls on every household to eliminate mosquito breeding sites by cleaning surroundings, removing stagnant water, and practicing proper waste disposal. By taking preventive measures and working together as a community, we can reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and protect the health of every family.
