The Philippines Department of Health (DOH) reported a six percent increase in dengue fever cases in recent weeks- 6,720 dengue cases were reported from May 11 to 24, compared to the 6,192 infections recorded from April 27 to May 10.
From the beginning of the year through June 7, DOH reports 123,291 cases of dengue nationwide. While the numbers are increasing, health officials say the situation is "manageable" so far.
The DOH said the fatality rate as of June 7 remained low at 0.4 percent, or four deaths out of 1,000 dengue patients nationwide.
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said the uptick in dengue cases is expected as the rainy season has started.
“We usually see an increase during the rainy season. We have to prevent this by intensifying vector control,” Herbosa said.
He urged the public to take part in the fight against dengue by conducting cleanup activities every 4 p.m.

The "4S" strategy includes the following key actions: "search" and destroy mosquito breeding grounds by eliminating stagnant water and removing containers that hold water, "self-protection" measures such as using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, "seek" early consultation with a doctor or healthcare worker if you experience symptoms, and "support" fogging or spraying in local hotspots or outbreak areas where an increase in cases has been reported.
