In Islamabad, the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed the detection of the 72nd wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case of 2024 in the country.
The lab confirmed one polio case from a female child from Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan) today. The onset of this case was on December 31, 2024.
This is the 11th case reported in DI Khan, a city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in 2024.
Of the 72 cases reported in 2024, they are reported from the following provinces: 27 are from Balochistan, 22 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 21 from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
This is the 97th WPV-1 case reported globally in 2024 (including 25 in Afghanistan).
