In an update on the dengue fever outbreak in Samoa, the Ministry of Health reported 1,446 clinically diagnosed dengue cases from all district hospitals including Tupua Tamasese Central Hospital in Motootua, including 342 laboratory confirmed cases the week ending August 3.
Since the beginning of the year, 5,670 cases of clinically diagnosed dengue fever have been reported, of which, 2,619 of these have been confirmed by laboratory tests.
Four deaths due to dengue have been reported, plus one probable dengue death awaiting confirmation.
85 percent of the confirmed cases were serotyped as DENV-1, while 15 percent were DENV-2.
Seven out of 10 cases are reported in people under the age of 15.
90 percent of all cases were reported on Upolu island.
