The Public Health Agency of Catalonia reports investigating an outbreak of five autochthonous dengue fever cases in the Tarragona.
Two of the cases were admitted to the Joan XXIII Hospital and subsequently discharged home, a third symptomatic case did not require hospital admission and two more cases have been asymptomatic.
Last year, three locally transmitted dengue cases were reported in Catalonia in 2023.
Health authorities said to avoid possible contagion, the procedure is as follows: when new cases are confirmed, an active search for new cases is carried out, through inspections to detect possible foci of transmission from mosquitoes, and the primary care and hospital services of the area to detect suspicious cases. In addition, we work directly with the municipalities of residence of these cases to provide recommendations for the protection against mosquito bites. Finally, the Blood and Tissue Bank carries out systematic screenings for dengue fever and other diseases transmitted by mosquitoes in donors in Catalonia.
