Dengue death toll rises to 20

In a follow-up on the dengue fever outbreak in Sri Lanka, the Director of the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), Dr. Kapila Kannangara said Sri Lanka has recorded 35,228 dengue cases, including more than 8,600 cases in May, and 20 dengue-related deaths so far in 2026.

This represents an increase of at least 30 percent compared to the same period last year.

Western Province accounts for roughly 50% of all reported cases, with the highest disease burdens found in the Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara districts.

The NDCU reports that a sharp rise in infections has pushed hospital capacities to their limits. This spike is heavily driven by increased rainfall and flooding associated with the ongoing southwest monsoon season.

In response to the surge, the Ministry of Health has authorized local Medical Officer of Health (MOH) offices to take legal action against premises neglecting mosquito breeding sites. Additionally, a special islandwide mosquito control and clean-up program has been scheduled to run from June 8 to June 10, 2026.
