The outbreak of mpox clade 2b in Stockholm, Sweden that began in December 2024 is considered to be over.
During epi weeks 22–24, no new cases have been reported, and in the weeks before that, single cases were reported per week.
A total of 61 confirmed cases have been reported between December 2024 and May 2025, of which 54 have been infected in Sweden. This is the most extensive spread of infection in Sweden since the first wave in 2022–2023, when mpox began to spread in the country.
Of the 61 cases, most were men, the average age was 38 years with a spread between 21 and 63 years. The peak was seen in week 6, when 8 confirmed cases were reported. Of the 61 cases, 26 were previously vaccinated against mpox.
Vaccinated people often have milder symptoms than unvaccinated people and it is possible that there are people with mild symptoms who have not been identified in the outbreak.
Mpox is still spreading internationally, and there is therefore a risk of infection abroad during the summer, when many people are traveling. There is also a risk of continued spread within Sweden.
The risk of infection is greatest in connection with new sexual contacts. It is still important to follow the advice below to avoid becoming infected and infecting others.
