Tonga health officials reported 13 new dengue fever cases on March 10, bringing the outbreak total to 194.
Majority of confirmed cases from Vava’u (98), the rest from Tongatapu (65) and ‘Eua (31).
A total of 9 cases are currently hospitalized (4 Prince Ngu, 3 Niu’eiki, 2 Vaiola). All in stable condition.
No dengue-related death reported so far.
Age group mostly affected is 10-19 years old. Youngest age to be affected is 7 months old baby boy.
Dengue Virus Type 2 (DENV-2) is the responsible virus for this current outbreak in Tonga.
Ongoing case investigation and vector control to hot spot and high risk areas, and awareness programs to communities including the Tupou Tertiary Institute, GMS Talafoou, Port Authories and Palace Office in Tongatapu; and also Tokaikolo Leimatu’a in Vava’u.
Clean-up campaign continues in Vava’u to the Hihifo district area starting from Taoa all the way to Longomapu.
