As a result of active and sustained epidemiological surveillance for the detection of the Oropouche Virus since 2023, the year in which the presence of cases in the region was confirmed in March 2025, the first five positive cases of this virus have been identified in the country. In this way, the response of the National Public Health System (SPNS) was quickly and effectively detected, the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reported through an official statement.
The Minister of People's Power for Health, Magaly Gutiérrez, shared the message on her Telegram channel, where she added that the positive cases of the aforementioned virus have already been treated and recovered, in that sense, the spread of the virus in the area of influence has been contained.
“The Oropouche virus (OROV) is an arbovirus that is transmitted primarily through the bite of the Culicoides genus, commonly known as midges, and, to a lesser extent, by mosquitoes of the Culex genus, which live naturally in several regions of Latin America, where recurrent outbreaks have been reported,” the statement said.
In this regard, the head of the aforementioned ministry indicated that vector control brigades have been deployed throughout the country to eliminate breeding sites through fumigation and the use of biocontrol agents to reduce mosquito density.
Likewise, it urges the Venezuelan population to report any symptoms consistent with the disease (fever, headache, muscle pain, etc.) to health centers so they can receive immediate care and control any spread.
