In a follow-up on the yellow fever situation in São Paulo state, Brazil, the state health department reported Friday that there are 12 confirmed cases of yellow fever in the state (11 reported within the state and one imported from Minas Gerais), including eight deaths caused by the disease.
All eight of the fatal cases were unvaccinated.
The cases reported in São Paulo state are reported from the following cities: Socorro, Joanópolis, Campinas, Brotas, Tuiuti, Amparo, and Valinhos.
In addition, there are also records of 30 cases of deaths of non-human primates, one of which was in Osasco, in greater São Paulo.
With Carnival approaching, a holiday when the number of trips tends to increase, the department recommends that those who go to rural or forested areas seek immunization.
The initial symptoms of yellow fever are the sudden onset of fever, chills, severe headache, muscle aches, general body aches, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and weakness.
The Ministry of Health issued a warning earlier this month about the increase in yellow fever transmission in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Roraima and Tocantins. The technical note - sent to the health departments - highlights that the seasonal period of the disease runs from December to May and recommends intensifying surveillance and immunization actions in areas considered at risk.
The yellow fever vaccine is the main tool for preventing the disease. The vaccine is part of the basic vaccination schedule for children aged nine months to under five years, with a booster dose at four years of age. A single dose is also scheduled for people aged five to 59 who have not yet been immunized.
