In a follow-up on the dengue epidemic in Paraguay, the Ministry of Health reports in the last three weeks, (epi weeks) 5, 6 and 7, 54,654 total dengue cases were identified, with 6,930 cases confirmed with dengue. In this period, there is an increase of 7% in case notifications at the country level, compared to the last three previous weeks.
Currently, the regions that present the highest number of cases are: Central, Asunción, Itapúa, Guairá, Cordillera, Alto Paraná, Caaguazú, Amambay, Canindeyú and Caazapá.
The age group most affected by the epidemic continues to be children between 5 and 9 years old, followed by the group between 10 and 14 years of age.
Since the beginning of the year, Paraguay has reported 131,454 total dengue cases, including 15,423 confirmed cases.
DEN-2 is the predominant serotype, with 89% of cases in the country.
Of the deaths entered into the surveillance system, 44 have been closed and classified as dengue deaths. The age group with the highest number of deaths is 20 to 39 years old. In the pediatric group there are 13 deaths due to dengue, 12 of them under 15 years of age.
Health officials say symptoms of high fever, abdominal pain, persistent vomiting and bleeding should prompt immediate medical evaluation to avoid complications.
